LSH is an alternative to a total hysterectomy that preserves the majority of a woman's reproductive organs, including her cervix and often her ovaries. By preserving the cervix, a woman's mucuous-secreting glands are saved, which avoids vaginal dryness, one of the most common complaints after other hysterectomies. By sparing the ovaries, a woman avoids having to undergo hormone replacement therapy in most cases.

LSH also affords better pelvic support because the ligaments that support the cervix and vagina are left intact. With the help of a laproscope – a small device with a camera and light attached at the end – Dr. Gorman performs a partial hysterectomy through a small abdominal incision.
